Bondage Undone

Bondage Undone

Easter is coming – our Most important celebration – God actually knows we need celebrations to remember where we came from – who we are—where we are going. We need constant rhythms weekly – communion – celebrations yearly –we forget easily

  • Remembering helps us stay on track
  • Gives us joy in the hard times

The Old and New Testaments reveal a problem – that Easter is meant to solve

  • For bible believers the first and second covenant are found in the Pentateuch – the Passover – Exodus – and the Resurrection story in the New Testament
  • The story of the Exodus and the story of Jesus and the resurrection are tied together
  • The Passover story (the Exodus) was the true story that was meant to build on – the New Testament is the fulfillment of what God reveals about Himself and His perspective – a foreshadowing

1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV) 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

1st The Exodus reveals Gods perspective — the whole world is in bondage —

  • Darkness – confusion
  • Separated from Gods perspective reliant upon our own or other humans
  • Interesting how in the Old and The New Testament the people are in a similar place – Egypt – Rome –Pharaoh –Caesar

Exodus 3:7–10 (NIV) 7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8

Luke 2:1 (NIV) 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

  1. God got directly involved –to show us what kind of bondage we are in

Genesis 3:9–19 (NIV)

  • Bondage to what? – the curse and all its darkness
  • Shame – fear – A lack of understanding (Not walking with God in the same way)
  • Hard relationships
  • The sweat of our brow
  • A spiritual enemy – the war is over truth – Light and darkness

  1. The Old and New Testament reveals that Everyone is in bondage – Jesus affirms it
  2. The Old and New Testament reveals that God will judge sin –He determines what it is and what the penalty for that is
  3. The Old and New Testament reveals that even if we had the truth –there is a brokenness inside of us that needs to be cured – Only He has it
  4. The Old and New Testament reveals that death in this life and in eternity is a reality but God has the antidote to that.

  1. The way of deliverance is found in a person – Jesus

John 1:1–14 (NIV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it……. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Isaiah 9:2–7 (NIV)

John 8:31–47 (NIV) 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 14:5–11 (NIV)

  1. Delivered – Bondage undone – Our new identity and role now

Exodus 19:4–6 (NIV) 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

1 Peter 2:16 (NIV) 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves (Bondservants).

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV) 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

2 Corinthians 5:16–21 (NIV)

The assignment

  • Pray about who you will invite to church for Easter

For Small Group Discussion

Opening Question: Have you ever been stuck or stranded somewhere? What happened?

Main Point: Just as the Israelites were in bondage; we are also born into bondage whether we can see it nor not. And like the Israelites, God sees us, hears our prayers, and wants to save us from that bondage (sin). We are justified by Jesus and saved for a purpose.

Main Scripture: Exodus 3:7-10

Head Questions

  • What was God’s response to the bondage of His people?
  • What were the Israelites saved from? What were they saved for?

Heart Questions

  • When was the moment you knew you needed a Savior?
  • Like the Israelites, some bondage we experience is the work of others in our life, while some bondage is of our own making. Consider Romans 8:12-16. What choices are you currently making that are keeping you in bondage?
  • Share a time in your life when you knew that God had seen and heard you.

Hands Questions

  • What situation (yours or a loved one’s) are you praying God will see, hear, and act upon?

Additional Scripture: Romans 3:21-26, Proverbs 17:15
