o Last week – stewarding our health – mental, emotional, physical, relational, spiritual

PREVIEW

  • As we’re in the countdown to Christmas – seeking to keep God at the center amidst all the busy
  • Remembering the Christmas story starts long before Bethlehem, Mary, Joseph, angels, etc
  • John’s account of the beginning of the Christmas Story

Jesus is God

John 1:1-5 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. NLT

  1. Attributes of His Deity (Jn 1:1-5)

Eternal – “already existed”

    • Micah 5:2b – “His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.” NASB // Col 1:17; Jn 8:58

Divine – “with God …was God” – The Trinity

    • Gen 1:26a “Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.” NLT
    • Father, Son, Holy Spirit – Matt 3:16-17; Jn 14:15-17; 2 Cor 13:14
      • Heb 1:3b Jesus is “the exact representation of His [God’s] nature” NASB
      • Col 1:19 “For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ” NLT
      • Who raised Jesus from the dead?
        • Father – 1 Thess 1:10; 1 Cor 6:14; Eph 1:20; Acts 2:24
        • Son – Jn 10:17-18; Jn 2:19-22
        • Holy Spirit – Rom 8:11

Creator – “nothing was created except through Him” – Col 1:15-17; Rom 11:36; Heb 1:2, 10

  • Psalm 139:13-18 – He made you

Life Giver – “gave life to everything” – Jn 11:25-26

  • He wants to give you life – Jn 10:10

Supreme – “the darkness can never extinguish it” – Phil 2:9-11; Heb 1:3; Acts 7:56; 1 Cor 15:57; Rev 1; Col 1:15

So John seems to think Jesus is Divine (Jn 1:1-5) – God in the flesh – and the New Testament writers agree

Jesus declared His Deity as well

  • His words – John 8:58-59 “Before Abraham was, I AM” (ref Exod 3:14)
  • His actions – He said to only worship God but He also receives worship – Matt 4:10; Matt 14:33 o Conclusion: Liar, Lunatic or Lord?
  1. Yet He takes on human form – completely
    • Word became flesh – Jn 1:14, 18 (Heb 4:14-16)

Sam Meredith                    JESUS IS… (Week 1) December 5th & 8th, 2024

o A real body – Matt 4:2 – hungry; Jn 4:6 – tired

  • Emptied Himself – Phil 2:6-8 Though he was God, [a] he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. NLT
  1. Jesus is the only One that could sufficiently pay the price for humanity’s sinfulness
    • The perfect sacrifice – fully God, without spot or sin – no debt of His own to pay and an unending ability to pay for others – 1 Pet 2:22; Isa 53:9; Matt 27:19
    • The perfect substitute – fully human, able to be identified with us and stand in our place – 1 Jn 2:2; Heb 7:26-27; 9:13-14; 1 Tim 2:5
  1. Let’s be a people who respond like Mary (Luke 1:26-38)

Luke 1:38a Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” NLT
