The Real War: Helmet of Salvation

The Real War: Helmet of Salvation

Ephesians 6:10–18 (NIV) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of  evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

The Helmet of Salvation –

  • Covers your mind
  • Renewed in the mind (Romans 12:1–2)
  • Its connected to salvation

1 Thessalonians 5:4–11 (NIV) 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Important truths

Romans 8:28–29 (NIV) 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also

called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

3 Stages of the believer’s life – the helmet of salvation Connected to salvation –3 stages of salvation

  1. Past tense –Justification: declared righteous

“I have been saved from judgement”

Romans 3:22–25, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Ephesians 2:8–10

The lies about justification

    1. “I have to get my life cleaned up before I present it to God”
    2. “I have sinned too much – I can’t be saved – I am cursed”
    3. “I have to work for my salvation”

2. Present tense – Sanctified: conformed into the image of His Son Jesus

“I am being saved from the control of sin”

John 17:15–19, 1 John 3:9, 1 Peter 1:1–2, Romans 8:22–23

The lies about sanctification

  1. If I am struggling with my sanctification my justification is impacted
  2. I have crossed the finish line and am saved so now I have hell insurance
  3. If I do the right thing I can achieve glorification
  4. I have to do things perfectly to keep grace now

3. Future tense – Glorified

Saved from presence of sin and death – the flesh –the deceiver – the sinful world

1 Corinthians 15:51–53, Hebrews 9:27–28

The lies about glorification

  1. Everyone gets glorification
  2. “I can have glorification without justification and sanctification”
  3. There is heaven but no hell – soul death
  4. Heaven will be more of the same thing
  5. “If I don’t experience glorification now how do I know I will have it?”

f)  Ultimately the devil wants you to focus on now instead of focusing on heaven to get through
