Strength and Dignity: Week One – The Proverbs 31 Woman

Mother’s Day – Celebrating Gods design and those who live it out.
• Celebrating the women in my life – My grandmother—mother—mother-in-law, aunts, wife, sisters, mothers and sisters in the church – daughter in laws – The strength of having women living according to Gods design sets up the next generation to know what they should be rather than the worlds version.
• Not every woman has physical children, but they can help fill the absence of spiritual motherhood.
• So many women amazing women to choose from in the rest of the series.
• The Battle between the sexes started with the fall of mankind.
• The world/Devil seeks to draw us into the wrong places.
• Feminism –
• Example: Gender distinctions don’t exist, or one is more valuable than the other
• No such things as women –or women are sex objects or are supposed to do whatever they want or anything a man can do, I can do.
Titus 2:3–5 (NIV) Romans 12:1–2 (NIV) 1 Peter 1:17–19 (NIV)
Beginning in this series with Proverbs 31 –The context:
• All of Proverbs is meant to teach wisdom to Solomon’s Son
• In this case this chapter is from a mother’s perspective to her son.
• Much of it is poetry – principles not formulas.
• Written in an acrostic – 22 Hebrew letters in order.
• In the beginning of the chapter – stay away from alcohol -be sober minded.
Proverbs 31:1 (NIV) 1 The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him. Proverbs 31:10–31 (NIV) 10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. 15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. 16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies the merchants with sashes. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
1. Notice she tells her son a noble wife (noble character) is rare—worth searching for and finding.
• Son: This is who you should look for—
• Daughter this is what you should strive for
• People of God –this is the kind of woman you should celebrate.

2. Who Can Be a Proverbs 31 Woman? —seeking the ideal to find and to be
• Men since we are the bride of Christ we should grow in these characteristics as well.
• One reason a woman might skip past Proverbs 31 is that not all women marry, and not all who marry become parents. Unmarried women or a wife with no children still aspire to the qualities of a Proverbs 31 woman.
• Why? A virtuous – noble woman
• A proverbs 31 woman is unattainable if perfection is required—just as there are no perfect men other than Jesus.
