He Shall Be Called-Mighty God: Week 2

He Shall Be Called-Mighty God: Week 2

Mighty God

Purpose of the series: We are looking at this specific prophecy pointing towards Jesus Christ. Specifically, we are exploring the titles given to Jesus through this passage.

Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Today we are going to be focusing on God being a “MIGHTY GOD”. All of the power of God (the mightiness) of God dwells in the person of Jesus Christ!

Three words that do a good job describing God:
• Omnipresent – “To be present everywhere at the same time”
• Omniscient – “To know everything”
• Omnipotent – “Having unlimited power, the ability to accomplish anything”

GOD IS “OMNIPRESENT” – GOD IS EVERYWHERE AT THE SAME TIME

Psalm 139:7-10 (ESV) Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

Jeremiah 23:23-24 (ESV) Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.

GOD IS “OMNISCIENT” – GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING

Psalm 147:5 (ESV) Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

God even knows our hearts and our intentions.

1 John 3:20 (ESV) For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.

Hebrews 4:13 (ESV) And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

GOD IS “OMNIPOTENT” – GOD IS UNLIMITED IN POWER AND MIGHT
We are taught things like:
“You can do anything you put your mind to”
“The only thing limiting you is yourself”

This is a nice idea but we are limited in what we can do. For Example: I cannot defy gravity no matter how hard I focus my mind on it. I cannot create matter out of nothing (1st Law of Thermodynamics) no matter how hard I try or how much I believe that I can.
But God can because He is infinite in Power!

Scripture is full of examples of the infinite power of God!
Gen 1:1 (ESV) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Psalm 33:8-9 (ESV) Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Stop and think about those words:

• Wonderful Counselor
• Mighty God
• Everlasting Father
• Prince of Peace

God, in all His POWER and MIGHT saw you and me in desperate need of a savior…and He did something about it…
John 3:16 (ESV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Deuteronomy 10:17 (ESV) For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God
